Just 50 metres from the hotel we find the beautiful Church of San Zaccaria, overlooking the square of the same name. The façade, designed by Codussi between 1480 and 1500, breaks with the traditional Venetian Gothic style. Just 5 minutes away on foot we find the square called Santa Maria Formosa, containing the church of the same name. A short distance away, there is the Library of the Querini Stampalia, a building once belonging to the Querini family. At the end of Calle delle Rasse, in Riva degli Schiavoni (named for the slaves originating from Dalmatia), we can admire the Church of the Pietà, constructed by the architect Massari, dating back to 1700. The church was named "Pietà" because it was constructed near an orphanage where the abandoned children were educated, among the other professions, to become musicians. A few meters away from here, continuing towards the inside and returning towards the hotel, the Greek College and the Greek Church can be visited, which were established by the Greek community from 1526. The church encloses many Byzantine paintings and the Museum of Byzantine Icons, the largest collection of this kind in existence in any western country. Returning towards the hotel, we can visit the School of San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, which encloses nine masterpieces by Carpaccio among which, the famous Saint George and the dragon. |
